How to Identify Your Grease Nipple Standard

Measure the hex size

Use a spanner or vernier caliper across the flats:

  • 8 mm — M5 metric
  • 9 mm — M6 metric
  • 10 mm — 1/4" UNF (most common)
  • 11 mm — M8 or 7/16" UNF
  • 14 mm — M10 or 1/8" BSP

Count the threads

Use a thread pitch gauge against the thread flank.

  • 28 TPI — 1/4" UNF or 1/8" BSP
  • 20 TPI — 7/16" UNF
  • 1.0 mm pitch — M6, M8 or M10 metric
  • 0.8 mm pitch — M5 metric

Machine brand & era

Use the manufacturer and build year as a guide:

  • Most machinery — 1/4" UNF
  • Modern EU (post-2010) — likely M6
  • Older British (pre-1985) — 1/8" BSP
  • American imports — 7/16" UNF
