Why BSP sizes don't match the measurement
A 1/2" BSP fitting has an outside diameter of 20.955 mm — not 12.7 mm. BSP sizing refers to the bore of the original Victorian gas pipe the thread was designed for, not the thread OD. Always measure the OD with calipers and look up the nominal size below.
| Nominal Size | OD (mm) | OD (in) | TPI | Approx Bore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/8" | 9.728 | 0.383" | 28 | 6.8 mm |
| 1/4" | 13.157 | 0.518" | 19 | 9.0 mm |
| 3/8" | 16.662 | 0.656" | 19 | 12.5 mm |
| 1/2" | 20.955 | 0.825" | 14 | 16.0 mm |
| 3/4" | 26.441 | 1.041" | 14 | 20.5 mm |
| 1" | 33.249 | 1.309" | 11 | 25.5 mm |
| 1-1/4" | 41.91 | 1.650" | 11 | 32.0 mm |
| 1-1/2" | 47.803 | 1.882" | 11 | 38.5 mm |
| 2" | 59.614 | 2.347" | 11 | 50.0 mm |

How to Identify a Pipe or Fitting
Measure the OD
Use digital calipers. Measure across the outside of the thread or pipe wall — not the bore. Note the measurement in mm.
Search the chart
Type your mm measurement into the search box above. Results filter to show the closest matching standard sizes.
Identify the type
Check the pipe material and application to pick the right table — BSP for threaded fittings, hydraulic tube for machinery.
Check BSPP vs BSPT
For BSP fittings, check if the thread is parallel (BSPP — seals on face) or tapered (BSPT — seals on thread with PTFE tape).
